While reading the documentation, I got the impression that the wildcard search is enabled by default. However, this seems not to be the case. Did I miss something in the docs? How can I enable wildcard search?

It should be enabled by default, what behaviour do you see?

Now that I look more closely to the string that ends up to Compass, I see that the problem was in my own framework and the way it preprocessed the string. Woah, sometimes embedding too much things can confuse you.
